Botox® and Dysport®

What are Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin®?

Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin® are types of Botulinum Toxin type A, a protein complex. They are injectable medications used to help reduce the appearance of types of dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles are creases that have been worn into the skin by making the same expression many times. Common types of these wrinkles are: ‘frown lines’, ‘crow’s feet’ around the eyes, and horizontal forehead lines. These lines can make us look older, angry, tired or worried.

Botox®, Dysport® and Xeomin® are often combined with other treatment modalities, such as dermal fillers to achieve optimal results.

Botox®, Dysport®  and Xeomin® are Health Canada Approved products to reduce the appearance of existing wrinkles of the upper face.

How does it work?

Botulinum toxin injections are made from highly purified, naturally occurring proteins. They have the ability to very precisely relax the muscles to which they are applied. The skin over the treated muscles gradually becomes smoother and less wrinkled as the muscles relax.

The treatment is gentle and brief, involving a series of small injections to treat the areas of concern. No sedation or local anesthetic is required. Following your treatment, it will take a few days for the treated muscles to start to relax, the full effects take 7-14 days. The effects are not permanent, but usually last for several months. About three months following your treatment, the effects will gradually start to wear off and the treated muscles gradually return to their normal condition. You will need to return for more injections if you wish to maintain the results.

Treatments can be stopped at any time, you will gradually return to your pre-treatment appearance.

What are the risks?

Potential Side Effects and Complications:

  • Minimal discomfort may be experienced when the needle is inserted.
  • Temporary mild swelling and or bruising may be experienced at the treatment site(s). Any bruising that occurs can easily be hidden with makeup and typically resolves within a few days.

What to expect after your Botox®, Dysport® or Xeomin® treatment

Please follow these instructions after each Botox®/Dysport®/Xeomin® treatment:

You may notice some minor swelling and/or redness at the injection site. This is temporary and should return to normal within an hour.

Approximately 10% of individuals may experience a mild temporary headache with treatments involving the upper face. You may take Tylenol or Advil if this occurs.

For the next 4 hours, keep your head upright, do not bend over or lie down. Wait at least 4 hours before touching, pressing or manipulating the treated areas. You can apply make up after 4 hours.

You may notice some slight bruising, as from any injection. This is common and will gradually disappear. You can cover the area with makeup if needed.

You can immediately resume your usual activities, but should avoid exercise/work outs, and saunas until the following morning.

Be patient - Botox®/Dysport®/Xeomin® results are not immediately apparent. You may start to notice changes as early as 3-5 days, but the final results take up to 2 weeks.

Avoid facial aesthetic treatments such as, laser/light/energy-based treatments for one week.

We will arrange a follow up appointment with you in 2 weeks time to evaluate the progress following your treatment. You may require a touch-up treatment to be sure the targeted muscles are adequately treated. Once your desired results are achieved, typical maintenance is carried out every 3-4 months.
